Last night while walking through New Market I was offered cocaine. Cocaine! Unfortunately for the individual in question, I was holding a cone full of steaming hot french fries in my hand. I didn't need no cocaine.
We were on vacation in New York. My husband would wake super early as usual, and he would walk a couple of blocks to a local bakery to get me and the sleepy teens some breakfast. On his way back to the room one morning, a woman stepped in front of his path and asked if he saw anything he liked. He's not accustomed to being propositioned by strange women early in the morning. He just raised his bag and said, "No, I have bagels."
Oudezijds 100 is an ecumenical community based for more than forty years in the heart of Amsterdam's notorious Red Light District. In addition to bringing a message of grace and hope to the district, it serves as a half-way house for people who, for whatever reason, need a fresh start to their lives. At any given time several large families and dozens of students, volunteers, social workers and others, occupy the massive, ramshackle house at Oudezijds Achterburgwal 100.
If you're curious to see it for yourself, you really should stop by for dinner one night. Guests are always welcome!

Would you like cocaine with those fries?

Bagels and fries, yes. Hookers and cocaine, no!
